What is 4G? The standards are still being determined but already vendors are marketing next-generation mobile broadband equipment. The 4G standard may still be undefined, but the technology promises to deliver faster download speeds at lower costs. As is typical in the wireless industry, there are already competing standards vying for their piece of the 4G pie.
Qualcomm is pushing its approach, called Ultra Mobile Broadband, or UMB. GSM rivals, particularly Ericsson, are advocating another approach, LTE, or Long Term Evolution. The third cog in this wheel is WiMAX, which is being advocated by such heavyweights as Intel, Cisco and others.
